Today, we’re incredibly proud to share that Bridge the Gap has been honoured with the King’s Award for Voluntary Service, an achievement equivalent to an MBE for charities and non-profits. This recognition is a testament to the hard work, heart, and dedication of everyone who has been part of our journey, including our amazing volunteers. Over a year of work went into this process, and now, here we are – our commitment to the children and families we serve acknowledged at the highest level. It’s truly an overwhelming moment for all of us.
This award represents more than just recognition; it stands for our mission, values, and the foundation upon which Bridge the Gap was built. I started this work under the name Bridge the Gap in 2017, walking through the streets of Littleover and the surrounding neighbourhoods with my trolley, inviting anyone concerned about their child’s mental health to join me for a chat. Those early days of connecting with families in cafes and community spaces fuelled the growth of what we are today. When I met Nikki and we decided to transform Bridge the Gap into a Community Interest Company, we knew that volunteers would be our lifeblood.
Our journey has always been driven by community. From the local knitters who make our beloved “BTG Owls”, “worry worms” and octopus toys, to trained volunteers who lead our Compassionate Crafts sessions, and businesses that support us on their volunteer days – we simply could not do what we do without you. And it’s not just adults who are contributing; our youth volunteers play a crucial role too. Some of them have joined as part of their transition from receiving our support, while others volunteer through the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Their energy, insight, and generosity are inspiring, and they remind us that giving back to the community is a value we can all carry forward.
In addition to hands-on support, our volunteers are pivotal in fundraising. From bake sales to sponsored events, they make sure we can invite families into our space, their dedication allows us to reach more families and create more opportunities for support. The King's Award reminds us of the power of community and how much more we can achieve together.
The King’s Award for Voluntary Service isn’t just a title; it’s a mark of trust. It shows that our city believes in what we do – that Bridge the Gap is a place where kindness lives and where no one has to feel alone. The award includes an invitation for two representatives to attend a royal garden party, where they’ll meet other incredible groups working to make a difference. This is a proud moment for all of us, but it’s also a reminder of the work still ahead.
As we look forward, we face financial challenges, like many in the voluntary sector. Our volunteers are needed more than ever to support families, to welcome them with a warm drink, and to listen on those tough days. We’re calling on people who share our vision – to make Derby a community where every child feels supported and where families know they are not alone.
This award is just the beginning. Together, we’ll continue to build Derby Cares and create more opportunities for connection and support. Volunteering is at the heart of our work, and this award validates the power of kindness and community. Thank you to everyone who’s been part of this journey. The King’s Award tells us that what we do matters – and that it works. Now, let’s keep growing.
With love,
